North Korean leader Kim Jong Un conducted a two-day inspection of a new naval destroyer ahead of its commissioning, according to state media reports Thursday.

During the inspection, Kim observed a test of cruise missiles fired from the warship. The vessel represents part of North Korea's ongoing naval modernization efforts.

State media reported that Kim expressed intentions to accelerate the nuclear armament of the country's navy during his visit to the destroyer.

The inspection comes as North Korea continues efforts to modernize its naval fleet and enhance its maritime capabilities in the Pacific Ocean region. The new destroyer is expected to be formally commissioned into service following Kim's inspection.
