A small plane carrying a student pilot and flight instructor crashed into two homes in north Phoenix on Tuesday, injuring all three people involved in the incident.

The aircraft departed from a nearby airport but experienced mechanical issues shortly after takeoff, according to officials. The crew attempted to return to the airport when the plane struck the two residential properties.

The plane came to rest nose-down in a backyard after hitting the homes. Both people aboard the aircraft - the student pilot and flight instructor - sustained injuries in the crash.

A man who was inside one of the affected homes was also injured during the incident. The extent of the injuries to all three individuals was not immediately specified by authorities.

Officials have not released additional details about the specific type of mechanical failure that led to the crash or the identities of those involved. The incident remains under investigation.
