Georgia father convicted of murder in connection with son's school shooting
Colin Gray was found guilty on 29 counts, including second-degree murder, after his teenage son killed four people at Apalachee High School in 2024.

A Georgia jury on Tuesday found Colin Gray guilty of second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter in connection with a deadly school shooting carried out by his teenage son at Apalachee High School in September 2024. The 54-year-old father was convicted on all 29 counts after jurors deliberated for less than two hours.
Gray was found guilty of second-degree murder in the deaths of two 14-year-old students, Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo. He was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the killings of teachers Richard Aspinwall, 39, and Cristina Irimie, 53. The jury also found him guilty of multiple counts of reckless conduct and cruelty to children. Gray faces a maximum sentence of 180 years in prison.
Prosecutors argued that Gray gave his son Colt access to a gun and ammunition despite receiving warnings that the teenager posed a danger to others. According to testimony, Colin Gray had given his son the semiautomatic rifle as a Christmas gift before the shooting and allowed him access to the weapon despite being aware of his son's deteriorating mental health. Prosecutors said the father knew his son was obsessed with school shooters and had created a shrine to Nikolas Cruz, the perpetrator of the 2018 Parkland shooting.
The September 4, 2024 shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, northeast of Atlanta, left four people dead and nine others wounded. Investigators said Colt Gray, who was 14 at the time, carefully planned the attack and brought the rifle to school in his backpack. He left his second-period class, retrieved the weapon from a bathroom, and opened fire in classrooms and hallways.
Colin Gray showed little emotion as the verdict was read and was handcuffed in the courtroom. His case represents one of a growing number of instances where parents have been charged in connection with their children's involvement in mass shootings. Colt Gray has been indicted on 55 counts, including murder, and has pleaded not guilty. A status hearing in his case is scheduled for mid-March.
