Democratic Representatives Al Green and Christian Menefee will advance to a runoff election after neither candidate secured a majority of votes in Tuesday's primary for Texas's 18th Congressional District.

The matchup was created by redistricting changes that moved Green from Texas's 9th Congressional District into the 18th District, where he now faces Menefee, who was first elected to Congress earlier this year in a special election.

Green, a longtime incumbent who has served multiple terms in Congress, found himself competing against Menefee, making him one of the House's newest members. The race represents a contest between different generations within the Democratic Party.

The redistricting process effectively forced the two Democratic incumbents into the same district, setting up an unusual primary battle between sitting members of Congress from the same party.

A runoff election will be held in May to determine which candidate will represent the Democratic Party in the general election for the 18th Congressional District seat.
