Guest of Rep. Omar Arrested During Trump's State of the Union Address
Aliya Rahman, invited by Rep. Ilhan Omar, was arrested by Capitol Police for allegedly refusing to sit down during President Trump's State of the Union speech.

A guest of Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) was arrested by Capitol Police during President Trump's State of the Union address on Tuesday evening for allegedly refusing to follow orders to sit down.
Aliya Rahman, a U.S. citizen and Minneapolis resident, was invited by Omar to attend the speech. According to Omar, Rahman was "forcibly removed" after standing for a "short period of time, part of which other guests were also standing." Capitol Police charged Rahman with unlawful conduct for refusing to obey orders.
Omar had invited Rahman as her guest following an incident in January when immigration agents removed Rahman from her car in Minneapolis as part of increased enforcement efforts by the Trump administration. The January incident involved officers shouting at Rahman to move during what officials described as operations targeting alleged undocumented immigrants.
During the State of the Union address, Rep. Omar also engaged in what she described as necessary interruptions of the president's speech. Speaking to CNN afterward, Omar said her actions were "unavoidable" and explained that when Trump spoke about protecting Americans, she felt compelled to remind him that his administration was responsible for the deaths of two of her constituents.
The incident occurred during what was Trump's longest State of the Union address on record. Capitol Police have not released additional details about the specific circumstances that led to Rahman's arrest or the duration of her detention.
